German Cello 1900 History

In the early 1900s, higher-quality handmade German cellos exported to the UK were prized for their superior craftsmanship, reflecting the country’s deep-rooted lutherie traditions. These instruments were built using carefully selected tonewoods, often aged spruce for the top and fine maple for the back, ensuring rich resonance and stability. German makers applied exquisite oil-based varnishes, enhancing both the cello’s tonal depth and visual beauty. Precision in carving and assembly resulted in excellent playability, with refined arching and expertly fitted components. These cellos, blending durability with sophisticated sound, were favoured by importers such as Rushwood & Draper. Whilst this example is not labelled, it closely resembles the cellos of the ‘Apollo’ series—a line of instruments aimed at advanced and professional cellists.
