This 1850s cello is in excellent structural condition, showcasing the exceptional quality of its original craftsmanship. Despite its age, it has required very few repairs, maintaining its integrity and character. The cello has been given a complete new setup, improving both playability and tonal response. It also features geared pegs, a fantastic upgrade for musicians performing early music on gut strings, offering precise tuning with ease while preserving the instrument’s traditional aesthetic. Overall, this well-preserved cello is the perfect blend of historical authenticity and modern practicality.
Setup
This cello has received a comprehensive professional setup, which includes a new top nut, bridge, soundpost, and strings, along with the installation of geared pegs. After these adjustments, the instrument was allowed to settle before final tonal refinements were made. The addition of geared pegs enabled us to experiment with a gut string setup, which revealed that the cello’s older construction style is particularly well-suited to the resonance and warmth of gut strings. For greater accessibility and versatility, the current setup features Larsen strings, making this cello ideal for a wide range of musical styles, from Baroque to modern repertoire.
Tone
This 1850s cello boasts a clear, seasoned, and powerful tone, enriched by its traditional construction, which omits blocks on the C-bouts. This older design, commonly found in German and Dutch cellos of the early 19th century, enhances its resonance and responsiveness. A strongly carved bass bar further reinforces the instrument’s projection, allowing for a full, rich lower register that carries effortlessly. Its tonal qualities make it an excellent choice for both Baroque and modern repertoire, offering musicians a broad palette of expressive colors. Whether navigating the delicate phrasing of early music or the dynamic demands of concertos and chamber works, this cello delivers a mature yet vibrant voice, blending historical authenticity with contemporary versatility.

German Cello 1850 History
This particular cello represents an earlier approach to German cello making, with its lack of blocks around the C-bouts. In contrast, later cellos feature blocks around the C-bouts, a construction method that enhances structural stability and tonal consistency. However, this early construction technique offers a distinct difference in its open, responsive tone, which is notably clear and vibrant. The lack of blocks around the C-bouts contributes to a more resonant and less restrained sound, allowing the cello to project with a natural, rich openness. This early design provides a tonal character that is both expressive and agile, ideal for musicians seeking a sound with a unique, dynamic presence.
